Will the Parade be held if it rains?

Yes, the parade will be held even if it rains. Parade participants will receive ponchos supplied by Japan Parade. In the event of a cancellation in response to dangerous weather such as a thunderstorm or hurricane, participants will be notified. Please note that our goal will be to hold the Parade as long as it is safe; in the case of uncertain weather, a decision to proceed or cancel may be made as late as the morning of the Parade.

Will the Parade have bathrooms?

Yes, the parade will place portable toilets at locations at the beginning and end of the Parade Route, and at the Street Fair.

Can children participate in the parade? Are strollers allowed?

Yes, children of all ages are welcome to participate in the parade. Strollers are allowed.

Are service dogs allowed in the parade?

Yes, service dogs are allowed in the parade. Please be aware that the Parade will be very loud and crowded. Any participating service dogs should be comfortable being in this type of environment.

Can my unit cosplay?

No, in order to avoid issues of copyright infringement, we ask that all participants refrain from the cosplay of specific characters from manga, anime, etc. General costumes (samurai, ninja, Japanese folktales, etc.) are permitted.

Can my unit jump in to participate the day of the parade?

No, all participants must first submit applications and receive notice that their application was reviewed and accepted, and then complete additional confirmation paperwork.

Is advertising allowed in the parade?

No, we do not allow advertising at the parade.

Can my unit stop and perform during the parade?

Yes, but with conditions: Given the nature of parades, the movement of the parade will start and stop naturally. When the Parade has stopped, performances are permitted and encouraged. However, please be sure to maintain a quarter block distance from the group in front of you while performing, and be prepared to march immediately after the Parade recommences. Participating units MUST NOT stop on their own to perform.

When will my unit find out if our application to participate was accepted?

Notice of whether or not your unit's application was accepted will be sent late March. Please note that accepted groups will receive additional paperwork to confirm their spot in the Parade.

Is there any place to leave our things while my unit marches?

No, we do not offer any space for leaving items while your unit participates in the parade. Your unit is responsible for your unit's belongings. Please make all necessary arrangements for transporting the items your unit requires independently and beforehand.

When will my unit find out what order my unit will march in?

Notice of what order your unit will march in will be sent several days prior to the day of the parade.

What time should my unit assemble at our designated area?

In order to ensure an well-organized, safe event, and to account for any unexpected traffic or transportation issues, most groups will be required to arrive 90 minutes prior to their scheduled marching time. You will be given a specific arrival time approximately a week before the Parade. PLEASE ARRIVE AS CLOSE TO YOUR ASSIGNED ARRIVAL TIME AS POSSIBLE

(NOT TOO EARLY OR TOO LATE). NOTE: Groups near the front of the Parade, or groups with complicated logistics may be required to show up earlier. Groups with seniors or small children can request to arrive closer to their start time.

How long will the march be from start to finish?

40 minutes, subject to changes based on the progress and pacing of the parade.

Should my unit disperse as soon as we reach the end point of the parade?

Your unit must depart the parade route as soon as you reach the end of the parade. Paricipants who wish to visit the Japan Parade Street Fair must exit the parade route as directed, and then proceed up Columbus Avenue to 72nd Street.

What should my unit do for our unit's banner?

The Japan Day Project Liaison Office will prepare a banner for your unit. If your unit already has a banner, you are welcome to use it during the parade. Please let our office know if you are planning on bringing your own banner.
